VFS Facilitation Service centers
open in South Africa
Modern Vfs visa facilitation centers accessible now!
South Africa is busy setting up 11 brand new visa facilitation centers, managed technology service specialist VFS Global and by international outsourcing, in order to streamline services for foreign nationals applying for visa extensions or changes in South Africa while tightening the nation’s security.
Speaking to journalists in Pretoria latest week, Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba said the centers would economically enforce the country’s new immigration rules, which came into an effect endmost months, while making life easier for exotic tourists, business people, workers or students who need extended or altered visas within a brief space of time.
“This is a revolutionary deviation from the existing mode of manual program processes that are liable for inefficiencies within the allowing environment,” Gigaba said.
A specialist service provider for authorities and diplomatic missions worldwide, VFS global, has been contracted to automate and run the program process, including managing the 11 facilitation centres spread across the nine states of South Africa and also the call centre.
Foreigners in South Africa who, for example, need to extend their temporary residence visas for study or work, will have the capacity to apply online and set up an appointment before visiting the nearest facilitation centre to submit their personal biometrics (fingerprints and photos). Visa and management fees will be paid electronically.
The determination to approve or reject applications still lies with the Department of Home Affairs, although VFS Global will be responsible for processing visa applications. “We will be able to exercise complete control over the decision-making procedures to ensure that our national interests and security imperatives are served at all times,” Gigaba said.
The decision to set up the new facilitation centers and contract their running outside to a private company had been informed “by none other than our commitment to improve efficiencies and turnaround times,” he added.
Such centers have been already introduced by the section in several its high-volume missions overseas – including its assignments in China, Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria – where it had previously struggled to reduce prolonged queues and lengthy turn-around times, Gigaba said.
“We have visa facilitation centers at quite a few of our high-quantity missions outside the country, and they’ve been working fairly successfully … bringing, I might add, to the success of our tourism stats over the last few years. It’s this great practice that we hope to roll out in South Africa.”
In line with the Department of Home Affairs, the 11 visa facilitation centres will all be fully functional and open by the end of June. They contain two centres in Gauteng province and the Western Cape, and one in every one of the other seven provinces, as follows:
Eastern Cape – Port Elizabeth
Free State – Bloemfontein
Gauteng – Johannesburg and Pretoria
Limpopo – Polokwane
Mpumalanga – Nelspruit
Northern Cape – Kimberley
North West – Rustenburg
Western Cape – Cape Town and George

The Department of Home Affairs spokesman, Thabo Makgola, said a private company, VFS Visa Processing SA Pty Ltd (VFS Global), was named to receive and manage visa and permit applications in South Africa. He said South Africa is taking immigration issues “seriously.”
VFS – Visa Facilitation Services (South Africa)
VFS Global, therefore, won’t offer visa seeking immigrants any guidance of the immigration rules and is a processing operation. Prospective immigrants will thus still need to consult with immigration lawyers or gather the rules from the Departments website.
VFS will not make a determination to allow or refuse a Visa. This determination remains with the Department of Home Affairs.
Specialists and South African immigration lawyers have recently expressed concern over its feeble migration policy saying the government would want to tighten laws to ensure security for the country. Even when the new immigration regulations were published, the organization around this was done, and they were criticized to the stage that specific immigration professionals are considering legal action against the Department of Home Affairs
The country is home to thousands of refugees from Somalia, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, India, Rwanda, and Democratic Republic of Congo among others. Malusi Gigaba was recently named Home Affairs Minister.
South African Home Affairs said the new Visa Facilitation Services (VFS) centres (called VACs) would open on Thursday (5 June 2014) in an effort to reinforce its immigration policy. Not all VACs have started yet, depending on the region involved the opening dates are as :
—Pretoria VAC, Kimberley, Rustenburg – 02 June 2014
— Durban VAC, Bloemfontein VAC, George VAC – 09 June 2014
— Johannesburg VAC – 18 June 2014
